The Lodge Addition

Project Image

The existing home was already well-loved. The family had no interest in moving, and every reason to stay. What they needed was space that could grow with them: a great room large enough for the way they actually entertained, guest quarters that offered real privacy, and an outdoor living area that matched the scale of the property around it. The Lodge Addition delivered all of it without disrupting what made the original home work.

Designing for the Setting

The site is wooded and private, and the addition was designed to work with that character rather than ignore it. Vaulted ceilings draw the eye upward and borrow scale from the trees outside. Oversized windows frame specific views, shifting from morning light on one side to the canopy at the rear. The transition from original structure to addition was handled with care: rooflines, materials, and proportions were carefully matched so the new reads as a natural extension of the old.

Built for Real Use

The great room expansion gave the family what they had been missing: a space generous enough for a crowd, with the warmth and proportion to feel comfortable for two. Rich wood accents, a stone fireplace, and custom built-ins bring texture and substance to the volume. The guest quarters are properly appointed, with enough separation from the main house that visitors feel at home rather than simply accommodated.

The outdoor terrace connects directly to the new great room, extending the footprint of the home into the landscape. Deep seating areas, open views of the property, and careful lighting make it a space that earns regular use through every season Virginia offers.

Seamless by Design

The goal with any addition is for the finished result to look like it was always there. That required close attention to the original home's detailing: matching millwork profiles, carrying materials through, and ensuring that moving from one part of the house to the other feels natural rather than like a transition. Standing in the finished space, it is difficult to identify exactly where the original home ends and the addition begins. That is exactly the point.
